Gift Basket

A very fun, creative, and profitable business that teens can organize and run all by themselves is the ever popular gift basket business. Teenagers tend to be much more artistic than adults and this is a talent that can be used to come up with many different ideas to be used in crafting gift baskets. This is also a business that, once begun as a teenager, can easily expand into quite a profitable operation the longer it’s tended.

Gift basket businesses are quite simple to start. You will, of course, need baskets of all types and sizes. That’s the first supplier you will need to locate. Something to check is if you may have a basket factory located near you. This is a great place to get quality baskets at bargain basement prices. If this isn’t an option, you can always hit your local dollar stores and stock up that way, at least in the beginning. [Read more...]

A Different Sort of Decorating Business

My christmas-decorated window

Something that older people and busy people need is a service that will do their holiday decorating for them. This can include such things as putting up outside holiday lights, decorating a tree, and assembling a lawn setting. The truly unique aspect of this business is that a package can be organized that includes both decorating and the taking down of the decorations once the holiday has passed.

Depending on how much decorating is involved, different prices will need to be set according to how much time it will take to do it. Other things taken into account will be transportation as well as any tools you will need to have on hand. Unless you are asked to purchase any decorations, the customers will have what they need and want put up when you arrive. The over head of the business is practically nothing. [Read more...]

Teens who are craft oriented can usually find all sorts of ways to start their own home businesses. It just depends on what their interests are and how they mesh with the current demand for their products. However, there are usually several outlets for items created by crafting them.

For example, candle making has really taken off in the last few years. With the sudden interest in things like aromatherapy and meditation, candles are especially sought after. Scented candles are of particular interest and sell quite well. These can be made at home by using essential oils in the mix. People use these for many different reasons and they are almost always in demand.

On the subject of aromatherapy and essential oils, if a teen is interested and talented in mixing these, many items can be created for sale. These include bath oils, bath salts, lotions, perfumes, and just about anything else that scent can be added to. Many shops will take these and sell them on consignment or they can be sold directly from a website. [Read more...]

When you have a teen who is blessed with an artistic talent or gift of some sort it may sometimes feel as if you don’t know what you should do to help her or him travel down the best path in life. For many of these teens, opportunities can come from all directions. This is when they will need your help to sift through them all and sort out the best choices.

First of all, you need to make sure that your teen is truly interested in making a career out of his or her gift. Sometimes there are some teens who are endowed with a true gift for something but have no interest in actually pursuing it. Granted, this is not the usual way this plays out because a talent is typically something that the person who has it loves doing. But that’s not the case one hundred percent of the time. Most teens have definitive schedules when they are in school. Home schooled teens are a bit more flexible as their curriculum work can be fitted in with their business schedule. Whichever way you’re educated, your parents’ help will most likely still be needed, at least in the beginning, when discussing what the best business for teens will be.

The first thing you want to do in tracking what the best business will be for you, as a teen, is to haul out some paper and a pen. You are going to make a list of what your passions are, at least the ones that can be turned into successful businesses. Another column can be used to list which of these you may have the means to turn into a business. Break them down even more into advantages and disadvantages of each idea.

Before you know it, you may have hit on just the right sort of business for teens that could work out perfectly for you. It’s not really that hard to pick out a business that will work out. All you need to do is mix together something you really love to do together with something that is feasible for you to run while also completing your education. [Read more...]

Starting Your Own Business

There are so many reasons that teens may get the idea to start their very own businesses. At times, these reasons are not exactly the right ones. There are also several misconceptions when it comes to Virtual Professions. Following are a few of these.

  • You want to get rich over night. Well, sadly this is just not going to happen for you no matter what you may have seen in the movies. Admittedly, there ARE a handful of businesses that became profitable rather quickly but these are the rarity and not the norm. In fact, if you make it through your first year with even a slight profit, you can consider your business a success.
  • A lot of money is needed to start your own business. Yes, many Virtual businesses require quite a bit of money to start. On the other hand, there are just as many home businesses that can be started for little to no financial outlay.  It truly depends on what sort of business you want to get off the ground. Teaching Teen Entrepreneurs Good Stewardship

Stewardship Graphic

Beyond creating teen entrepreneurs we must also teach our teens to be good stewards of their money.  What is the point of teaching them to be independent and creative in their business ventures if we do not teach them how to handle their finances?

Many college students today have no concept of money management.  They leave school with a huge debt from student loans and have started the path of “credit card = free money” living.

Buy today and pay later!  That is the code that so many Americans live by today.  And look at where we are heading.  Bankruptcy, loan defaults, and repossessions abound.  Why, because no one has ever taught us how to be good stewards of our money.

There are things we need to keep in mind regarding money generated when we help our teens get started in business. [Read more...]

As a teen entrepreneur who is interested in getting a business started, you will need some experience in setting up a business and then dealing with people in such a way that they will want to do business with you for the service you offer. However, as a teen, you most likely have not had a lot of experience in doing either of those things.

Enter the wonderful world of volunteering. This is a great way to learn how to do many different things from light office management to handling people in a crisis. You simply do your assigned tasks at whatever agency or organization you choose to volunteer for.  A lot of it is office work such as filing, answering the phone, and data entry. These may seem trite but they are all things you need to know how to do in a smoothly run a business. [Read more...]

Getting the Attention You Need

Our original business plan

Image by Yodel Anecdotal via Flickr

When you’re a teenager it’s sometimes hard to get adults to take you seriously about things. What do you do when you have a wonderful idea for a business, yet no one seems to think you’re capable of pulling it off? There are some ways to get the attention you need.

First of all, if you want to be treated as a mature person, be sure you’re behaving like one. For example, if your grades are good, and you’re meeting any responsibilities you have, chances are you have already been proving your maturity to people such as your parents and teachers. If your actions show you to be capable of taking on a venture such as starting a new business of your own, you will most likely get all the support you need. [Read more...]
